Sirpa at Tornio Artist in Residence 2002Strong, bold line and expressive colours form the basis of Finnish-born artist Sirpa Alalääkkölä’s work.

Predominant figures and integrated landscape interact with contrasting (yet harmonious) colours to create vibrancy to her paintings and murals which often portray intimate scenes with a sense of humour.

After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki where she was influenced by Expressionist Painters such as Picasso and Modigliani, Sirpa was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Tisch School of Arts at NYU.

After several well received exhibitions in Finland, Sirpa travelled abroad painting in the Pacific Islands, India and Australia. Settling in New Zealand in 1993, she is fast becoming a recognisable New Zealand artist.

Sirpa creates from her artstudio at Ngakuta Bay in the Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand and when in Europe she paints from a number of locations including Tornio, Finland, her hometown in Finland.

The future goal is to create artworks from Pöntsö in Finnish Lapland, 150km above the Artic Circle.

Pöntsö is 18km north of the Levi Ski Resort ( www.levi.fi ) Finland’s best sking and outdoor adventure paradise.
